Cummins Westport Powered Bus Wins 'Best City Bus' Awards in Russia

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 25, 2005) - Cummins Westport Inc. (CWI) today announced that a CWI-powered bus in Russia has won two awards for "Best City Bus" and "Development of Ecological Transport" at the Moscow International Motor Show (MIMS).

Recognition was awarded for innovative low-floor design coupled with the low emissions and low noise of the Cummins Westport natural gas engine.

The LiAZ Metropolitan City Bus, displayed at MIMS in Moscow, is powered by a CWI C Gas Plus natural gas engine. MosGorTrans, the Moscow Public Transport Company, has had a demonstration bus in operation since December 2004.

MosGorTrans is a state-owned company that operates all routes in Moscow. The company operates 5,198 buses in the city and its suburbs, in addition to electrical trolleys and trams in the city. MosGorTrans provides transit for over 12 million passengers each day.

Russia is a large market for public transportation, and has the largest natural gas reserves in the world. The current cost of natural gas fuel in Russia is approximately half that of equivalent diesel fuel. A number of regions in Russia are interested in using alternative fuel buses in their fleets.

"We are pleased with the recognition our engines continue to receive for emissions, performance, and economy," said Guan Saw, President of Cummins Westport. "With criteria such as market size, indigenous gas supply, and Cummins sales and distribution presence, Russia presents a real opportunity as customers and governments realize the benefits of operating CWI engines."
