Cummins & White Wins $1 Million Verdict for Chinese Business Owner Suing in California Courts for Unpaid Invoices

NEWPORT BEACH, CA--(Marketwired - Apr 24, 2014) - The American scales of justice tipped in favor of a Chinese Scale Manufacturer awarding its owner over a million dollars against Chino, California-based importer AC International Corporation which avoided paying for its orders allegedly by setting up a sham company in Hong Kong.

The lawyer securing the judgment for the Chinese client Mr. Ping Pan, is Jim Wakefield, lead trial counsel of the highly-regarded business law firm of Cummins & White, founded in 1951.

Mr. Wakefield said: "This case will give added confidence and encouragement to companies in China who wish to do business with American companies. American courts will protect Chinese businesses when American companies do not meet their legal obligations and especially if they engage in unfair business practices."

After a three-day trial, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Robert R. Brisco ruled in favor of Mr. Wakefield's client, Mr. Ping Pan, ordering the defendant, Chino, California-based importer AC International Corporation to pay damages, plus costs and interest, totaling more than $1.1 million.

"This was a complicated case," said Mr. Wakefield, "because the parties are from different countries -- instead of suing on behalf of our client's foreign corporation, we focused on Mr. Ping Pan as an individual suing on his personal behalf in the California courts allowing him to obtain a verdict for the significant debt to which he is entitled."
