WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 8, 2013) - Following three days of fruitless negotiations, members of Local 1393 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 1393) are now on legal strike against their employer, the University of Windsor.
"We are extremely disappointed, to say the least," said Dean Roy, President of CUPE 1393.
"Over the past three days, our bargaining team repeatedly tabled proposals that we believed addressed the University's concerns, but these proposals were repeatedly refused," he added.
Local 1393 represents 280 skilled trades and professional staff at the University of Windsor who provide a wide range of services vital to the smooth and effective operation of the institution.
Members of Local 1393 have been without a contract since April. To date, there have been nearly 30 days of negotiations with University.
Roy urged the University to return quickly to the bargaining table to minimize the disruption to students and the campus community.
"This dispute can be resolved, if there's a willingness by both sides to resolve it. Our members don't want to be on strike and if the University puts as much energy and resources into settling the matter as they did into 'contingency plans', then I believe this could be resolved quickly," said Roy.
Through a Provincially-appointed mediator, Local 1393 will be requesting further meetings with University in an effort to resolve the outstanding issues between the two sides.
