CUPE 3902 Reaches Tentative Agreement With University of Toronto

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 24, 2012) - Negotiators for Local 3902 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 3902), have reached a tentative agreement with their employer, the University of Toronto.

The tentative agreement was reached early Friday morning following a marathon bargaining session.

"Bargaining a collective agreement is never an easy task, but the best settlements are the ones that are achieved through the hard work of both parties to come to an agreement that both sides can live with," said Wayne Dealy, Chair of CUPE 3902.

The tentative agreement covers Unit 1 of Local 3902, which represents Post-Doctoral fellows, graduate students in the School of Graduate Studies, and University of Toronto undergraduate students employed as teaching assistants, teaching fellows, demonstrators, tutors, markers, instructors, teaching laboratory assistants, Chief Presiding Officers, invigilators and part-time lecturers.

Local 3902's bargaining committee has recommended to its members that they vote in support of the contract. This evening, at a general membership meeting, members of Local 3902 voted in favour of putting the proposed agreement to a unit-wide ratification vote, the results of which will be announced on Wednesday, February 29.

Members can review the proposed tentative agreement at Dealy said that he and other officials will have no further comment on the specifics of the agreement until after members have had an opportunity to review and vote on the agreement.

Local 3902 represents approximately 7,000 sessionals, teaching assistants and other contract instructional staff at U of T, Victoria University and the University of St. Michael's College.
