CUPE 4914 warns that Peel CAS needs to stop putting vital supports at risk and 'get serious' about negotiating a fair collective agreement

With September 17 lockout/strike deadline fast approaching, CUPE 4914 president calls on employer to move from 'dictate to negotiate'

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Sept. 6, 2016) - The Children's Aid Society of the Region of Peel (Peel CAS) is putting vital services to residents of Peel Region at risk by refusing to negotiate seriously, the president of the union representing frontline administrative and support staff warned today.

"We have several outstanding issues that need to be resolved through bargaining. Instead, the employer has appeared more interested in dictating to us what we will accept, rather than negotiating," said Sonia Yung, President of Local 4914 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 4914).

"Time is running out. These are vital services to residents of Peel Region that Peel CAS is putting at risk if they don't move from dictate to negotiate," she added.

Following two days of fruitless bargaining, CUPE 4914 requested a 'No Board' report from the Ministry of Labour. The two sides are scheduled to meet with a provincially-appointed mediator on September 14 in advance of lockout or strike deadline of 12:01 a.m., September 17.

Yung said that, while she believes a deal can be reached before the deadline, "it can't be reached if only one party is willing to sit down and actually negotiate. Our bargaining committee can't negotiate with itself. We need a willing partner across the table."

CUPE 4914 represents 435 frontline administrative and support staff working for Peel CAS. Their most recent contract expired on March 31.
