CUPE 926 Reaches Tentative Agreement with Wilfrid Laurier University

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - July 15, 2016) - Striking custodians, groundskeepers and trades, members of Local 926 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 926) today reached a tentative agreement with their employer, Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU).

The tentative agreement came on the heels of an intense day of protests outside the campus and a flurry of afternoon negotiations between the two sides, aided by a Provincially-appointed conciliation officer.

Allan Savard, President of CUPE 926 said in a statement that "the settlement does not give us everything that we were hoping for, but we will move forward in a positive way. We will continue to fight for what we believe in; a fair, living wage for all workers at WLU."

The members of CUPE 926 were forced to take strike action July 10 after the University took the extreme step of ending negotiations and unilaterally imposing terms on union members.

Members are expected to review the proposed tentative agreement on Sunday. Details of the proposed tentative agreement will not be disclosed until members have had an opportunity to review its contents and vote on whether or not to accept the terms of the agreement.

Accordingly, no further comment will be made until after members have reviewed and voted on the agreement.
