CUPE and the NDP: partners in protecting public services

TRURO, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - June 22, 2011) - CUPE Nova Scotia President Danny Cavanagh is in Ottawa this week attending a reception to celebrate the historic election of 103 New Democrats to the House of Commons.

Says Cavanagh, "I firmly believe that the NDP had this breakthrough with the electorate because their position on protecting public services is much more in line with the average, working Canadian family. Canadians understand the important role these services play in building strong communities.

"Postal services are one example of Canadians getting really good value for their tax dollars. Stephen Harper, in contrast, would rather see this service gutted and handed over to the private sector," says Cavanagh.

"I am glad Jack Layton and the official Opposition are here to defend public services and workers' rights. CUPE looks forward to working with them to ensure free collective bargaining is not simply trampled on by this majority government," says Cavanagh.
