CUPE Applauds City of St. John's New Recycling Initiative

ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR--(Marketwire - Jan. 29, 2010) - The union representing St. John's municipal workers is applauding the city's decision to launch its new recycling program, and to provide the service with city workers.

CUPE Local 569 President Bill Sheppard says, "We are very pleased to be moving ahead with this expansion of our solid waste program. Our members will be looking forward to the new work, and I'm sure the residents of St. John's will do their part for the environment by getting on board."

CUPE NL President Wayne Lucas says, "We're so glad to see the largest municipality proceeding in this direction, with a publicly-owned and operated system. We hope this sends a signal to other municipalities that these services can be provided in a cost-efficient manner by municipal employees.

"CUPE has been calling on municipalities to move forward with their own publicly-owned and operated solid waste management plans. The province has set a target of 50% diversion of waste from landfills and we are certainly looking forward to helping municipalities achieve that goal over the coming years," says Lucas.

CUPE will be launching its own public information campaign in the weeks ahead, outlining the benefits of public recycling programs.
