CUPE BC: Local Writers to Stir It Up in Defense of Public Libraries

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Oct. 21, 2009) - Curious book lovers might wonder what Caroline Adderson has in common with Stan Persky, or how David Chariandy might interface with political columnist Bill Tieleman. But these four writers, along with Larissa Lai and Carellin Brooks, will comprise the panel on Thursday night for what promises to be a lively discussion on public library funding and why the local integrity of library collections needs to be defended from BC Liberal cutbacks and the contracting out of services.

The panel discussion, "Public Libraries: Keep Them Local", is sponsored by CUPE Local 391 and will be hosted by local president Alexandra Youngberg and moderated by CUPE Communications rep and author Daniel Gawthrop. The event, which coincides with the Vancouver International Writers and Readers Festival, is aimed at raising awareness about the value of locally provided cataloguing and acquisition services and countering the effects of the provincial government's recent 22-per-cent cuts to library operating grants.

The event will feature a cash bar and one free drink ticket for all who attend.
