CUPE BC: Paramedics Set for Talks

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 10, 2009) - Representatives of the Ambulance Paramedics of BC and the provincial government are slated to meet tomorrow for two days of talks aimed at breaking the impasse in contract negotiations.

The CUPE 873 paramedics want the provincial government and the Ministry of Health to appoint an independent mediator to help reach a collective agreement. They are planning to discuss outstanding non-monetary items Thursday and monetary issues Friday.

Provincial mediator Mark Atkinson, who was originally assigned to the dispute before the strike, will be sitting in on the talks.

B.C.'s 3,500 ambulance paramedics have been on strike since April 1 for faster response times, better staffing levels, wage parity with other emergency responders and a multi-year contract. The paramedics continue to provide ambulance services under Essential Services.
