CUPE: Crossing Guards Back HRM's Proposal to Lower Speed Limit

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - March 23, 2009) - Crossing guards with CUPE Local 4814 support the Halifax Regional Municipality's proposal to lower the speed limit in school zone areas to 30 kilometres per hour.

Providing safe crossings, to and from school, for the youth of HRM is the number one job priority for the local's 150 crossing guards. "Many crossing guards witness speeding in school zones on a daily basis," said Pat Lamont, Vice-President of Local 4814. "Our guards emphatically agree that lowering the speed limit would greatly enhance our safety program."

To be effective, crossing guards would like to see this new speed limit combined with education for drivers, parents and students, in addition to strict enforcement by the Halifax Regional Police and the RCMP.
