CUPE Disappointed With Canjet Layoffs at Halifax Base

Updated information

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - May 20, 2010) - The union representing flight attendants with Canjet Airlines says it is disappointed with the company's decision to lay off 27 of 44 staff at its Halifax base.

CUPE National Representative Peter Baxter says, "The union was notified today of the pending layoffs for the Halifax Flight Attendants Base of Canjet, a division of IMP.

"The layoffs are effective June 3, and the reason given by the company is a lack of flying in Atlantic Canada due to the company's position in the charter market," says Baxter.

Says Baxter, "We are very disappointed with the approach the company is taking, namely to target some of its most senior and loyal workers. These are employees who have not only built the company but have stayed with Canjet through restructuring in the past.

"We were about to enter into contract negotiations next week which will now be postponed while the union deals with these layoffs," he says.

Baxter says the company has made minimal offers of assistance with relocation, but will be offering severance pay based on provisions in the Canada Labour Code.

Canjet flight attendants are members of CUPE Local 4044.
