CUPE Local 4400: Terminating 150 TDSB Educational Assistants- It Just Doesn't Add Up!

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 26, 2009) - "Chopping the jobs of 150 Regular Classroom Educational Assistants (E.A.s), which will directly affect at least 300 classrooms and disrupt many more, makes no sense", says Giselle Burton, Unit C Vice-President of CUPE 4400. "Removing help from the youngest and most needy students means kids with problems will slip through the cracks and place major demands on the schools in years to come".

Noting that in times of economic crisis, our investment in accessible, high quality public education would produce returns in value far above the dollar figure, Unit C Vice-President, Anna Hutchison, asks, "Why is there a rush to "balance" the budget at a time when both the federal and provincial governments are agreeing to run at a deficit?"

"This seems like robbing (a lot of little) Peters to pay (a giant) Paul", continued Burton. "Isn't it time to inject major stimulus funding into the schools boards and give the students what they need to succeed?"

Local 4400, representing 11,000 Education Workers at the Toronto District School Board, is planning a Rally for Educational Assistants and their supporters, including teachers and parents, just prior to the May Board Meeting on Wednesday, May 27th.

"We can't let the Trustees turn their backs on our students and our members", said CUPE 4400 President, John Weatherup. "The decision to terminate 150 E.A.s is just plain wrong and has to be reversed."

"They must stand up to the Province and demand adequate funding and we will continue to fight this unwise and unjust decision until it is remedied" Weatherup concluded.
