CUPE Local 503 Responds re Ottawa Mayor Wage Freeze Plan

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 27, 2009) - The Mayor's surprise announcement at the Mayor's breakfast series, re: Mayor's intention to demand that Dalton McGuinty introduce a 2 year wage freeze for provincial and municipal employees has caught the full Council by surprise. Some Councillors are reminding the Mayor that Dalton McGuinty has already said that he will not consider entering into the suicidal Rae-Days that brought the NDP down.

Madden further stated that this continued attack on the City workforce by the Mayor is completely unwarranted, "Why should the workers pay for the bad decisions that he has championed over his term as Mayor? His record and the record of others on this Council will be the topic of discussion at the time of the next Municipal elections, no doubt. We have offered the hand of cooperation in bringing forward cost saving initiatives during this time of budget review. Furthering these types of initiatives should have been the topic at the Mayor's breakfast rather than this attack on hard working employees of the City". CUPE, Local 503 invites the Mayor to engage in a discussion of how alternative and realistic cost saving initiatives can be achieved without unilaterally imposing a wage freeze on the backs of hard working City employees.
