CUPE Local 5050 sending 'call to action' to parents of all CBVRSB students

SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Dec. 19, 2011) - The union representing more than 1,4000 school board workers at the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board is issuing a 'call to action' to the parents of all children in the board.

CUPE National Representative Kathy MacLeod says, "News this week that the Department of Education is considering more cuts to school boards is very troubling and we want parents to know what the consequences of these cuts will be.

"We just went through a difficult round of cuts at the end of the last school year and lost dozens and dozens of important, frontline workers from this board. If parents are concerned about even more cuts coming then we suggest they should start getting involved and speaking up about the impact this is having in the classroom," says MacLeod.

CUPE Local 5050 President Liz MacDonald, meanwhile, says, "Our union will be contacting all of the Home and School Associations and any other organization that is associated with the CBVRSB and asking them if they want to get involved in a campaign to put an end to these needless cuts.

"It's CUPE Local 5050's belief that if the affected staff and the families of the students who will be hurt by these cuts start working together to send a clear message to the Department of Education that more cuts are not acceptable, we can change the direction the department is going in" says MacDonald.
