CUPE Local 5050 very disappointed with CBVRSB plans to cut staff

SYDNEY, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - April 20, 2011) - The president of CUPE Local 5050, Liz MacDondald, says her union is "very disappointed to hear about the planned staffing cuts at the Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board (CBVRSB), and equally disappointed that staff had to read about it in the newspaper."

Says MacDonald, "We had a meeting scheduled for next Tuesday with the Human Resources director and were told we would be getting more details. Following that meeting, we planned to meet with the affected employees. Why wouldn't the Board have waited until they provided us with those details before making public announcements?"

CUPE Nova Scotia President Danny Cavanagh, meanwhile, says, "I am having trouble understanding how eliminating some 50 Teaching Assistant positions meets the minister's criteria of protecting children with special needs. Those TA's, quite simply, are the lifeline for children in the school system who have special needs."

Local 5050, which represents some 1,400 education workers at the CBVRSB, says it will have more to say about the cuts once they have the full details from the Board.
