CUPE-Media Advisory: Carleton Employees to Pass Out Cookies and Ask for Fair Bargaining

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 20, 2010) -

Attention: Photo Editors, Assignment Editors

On October 21st, support staff, teaching assistants, contract instructors and faculty at Carleton University will be asking students and other members of the Carleton community to support their "Recipe for Fair Bargaining." Representatives from the three largest trade unions on campus will be passing out cookies and getting signatures on postcards addressed to the Board of Governors.

"We need Carleton University to bring a new attitude to the table," said Wiz Long, president of CUPE Local 2424 representing Carleton University support staff. "It takes an effort from both sides to reach a deal. So far, Carleton has not put in that effort."

In addition to CUPE Local 2424, CUPE Local 4600 representing TA's and contract instructors and the Carleton University Academic Staff Association (CUASA) are all in bargaining with Carleton University. CUASA and CUPE 2424 recently received strike mandates from their members. CUPE Local 4600 is holding a strike vote on October 26, 27 and 28th.

Carleton University president Roseann Runte has passed out cookies to students in the past.

The event will occur in multiple locations on campus starting at 12:00 noon.
