CUPE Media Advisory: CUPE 4308 Members Rally in Support of a Fair Contract

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 12, 2009) - Personal Support Workers (PSWs), members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 4308, at Toronto Homemaking Services, which provides homecare in Toronto, are fighting for a fair contract. The majority of these workers are women and from racialized communities in Toronto.

In support of their demands for a fair collective agreement, members, guest speakers and supporters will rally at 365 Bloor St E. at Sherbourne, on Thursday, May 14 at 4:30 p.m.

PSWs in homecare face a lack of guaranteed hours of work, little or no health care benefits and sick leave, and often do unpaid work to prop up the homecare system that is failing many of those most in need.

Currently, over 120 PSWs are looking to keep the gains that they have been able to make over the past 10 years and to make improvements - but THS is using bargaining to try and strip away the few rights and benefits these women have.

"Enough is enough," said Kelly O'Sullivan, president of CUPE 4308. "Dignity, respect and fairness is not a lot to ask. We need a fair collective agreement and we need it now. This will be a strong rally with a number of impressive guest speakers."
