CUPE: Media Advisory-REVISED-"Make the Right Choice. Keep Moratorium on For-Profit Child Care"-Advocates for Quality, Affordable Child Care Urge Waterloo Region

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 25, 2009) - A revised press release is being issued due to incorrect contact information contained in the release that was disseminated on February 24, 2009 at 11:44 am ET. The complete and corrected release follows.

Waterloo area families who rely on quality, affordable child care are depending on Waterloo regional councillors to make the right choice and keep a moratorium on funding for new for-profit child care centres, say local advocates for public child care who are making a deputation to council on Wednesday, February 25 at 7:00 p.m., 2nd Floor, 150 Frederick Street, Kitchener.

On Wednesday, Waterloo Regional Council is voting on a recommendation from staff to lift a moratorium on funding for-profit child care operators.

As part of the presentation to regional council, Marc Xuereb, presenting for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), will highlight the Australian experience with for-profit child care that resulted in low-quality care, higher fees and fewer spaces.

"We are urging regional councillors to put the interests of Waterloo families first and protect quality child care by rejecting the recommendation to lift the moratorium," says Xuereb.
