CUPE National President to show support for public workers in Wisconsin

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 11, 2011) - Paul Moist, national president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), will be attending a rally in Madison, WI on Saturday to show CUPE's support and solidarity for Wisconsin public sector union sisters and brothers.

CUPE is condemning Wisconsin Republican's recent stripping of the states' public sector worker's collective bargaining rights. Republican state senators used procedural maneuvers this week to force through Governor Scott Walkers' budget repair bill without the required senate quorum.

"Faced with mounting public disapproval, and ground swell resistance from public sector workers, Governor Walker and Wisconsin Republicans have turned to dubious means to circumvent the democratic process," said CUPE National President Paul Moist. "It is unconscionable that the rights of Wisconsin's 280,000 public sector workers are being so grievously abused."

In response to these underhanded tactics, thousands of public sector workers and their supporters have flooded in and around the state capital building in peaceful protest.

Moist will attend a planned rally at 3 p.m. ET, Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the state capital building. For news media wishing interviews, CUPE Media Relations officer Greg Taylor will be accompanying Moist.
