CUPE Nova Scotia urging participation in International Women's Day events

TRURO, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - March 5, 2012) - CUPE Nova Scotia President Danny Cavanagh says he's encouraged to see a wide variety of activities across the province marking this year's International Women's Day (IWD).

Says Cavanagh, "As the largest union in Canada - and one that is predominantly female - CUPE views March 8 and the activities that surround it as an important reminder to all Canadians that equality continues to elude many in our society."

Here's a sample of IWD events happening across Nova Scotia:

  • Nova Scotia Citizens' Health Care Network, Women's Action Alliance for Change and Dalhousie Women's Centre hold a discussion on women's health and the 2014 Health Accord. Tuesday, March 6th, 6:30 pm @ 2103 Gottingen St, The JBO Health Centre.
  • Sister to Courage: Stories from the world of Viola Desmond, Canada's Rosa Parks. MLA Lenore Zann is sponsoring this event in which Wanda Robson, the late Viola Desmond's sister, will be speaking. This free event will be held at NSCC Truro Campus on Arthur St., March 8 @ 7:00 p.m.
  • Conversations Across Feminist Theory, Disciplines, Activisms International Women's Day Featuring Isabelle Stengers, Susan Sherwin (Philosophy), Afua Cooper (Sociology & History). Senior Common Room, University of King's College, March 8 @ 12:30-1:30 pm.
