CUPE Nova Scotia urging Premier to join with Alward, other premiers in opposing EI reforms

TRURO, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - April 26, 2013) - CUPE Nova Scotia President Danny Cavanagh is encouraging Premier Dexter to join with New Brunswick Premier David Alward in opposing the Harper government's cuts to EI.

This week the Conservative premier of New Brunswick called on the Harper government to impose a moratorium on the changes to our EI system, after an unprecedented series of protests in that province.

Says Cavanagh, "I'm confident that Premier Dexter will take a similar position, as he has already been quite critical of the cuts to EI.

"What CUPE would actually like to see is that he and the other premiers ask for a rollback of the reforms, since they are already taking effect in many parts of the province."

The Atlantic premiers are scheduled to meet on Monday, April 29 at White Point in Nova Scotia.

Cavanagh says, "We need to take a united stand against these cuts - which demonstrate a profound lack of understanding of seasonal work in this part of the country - before they cause further damage to working families in our province."
