CUPE outside workers in Truro hold strike vote

TRURO, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - Sept. 19, 2013) - The union representing some 60 outside workers with the Town of Truro has taken a strike vote, as they head to conciliation talks in a few weeks.

CUPE National Representative Grant Dart says, "The employer has tabled a couple of key demands for concessions in this round of bargaining which prompted us to take this strike vote.

"The members of Local 734 have responded by giving their Bargaining Committee a very strong strike mandate," he says.

Says Dart, "We continue to be hopeful that we will reach a negotiated settlement for this group of workers. If both parties are committed to a deal that's fair and reasonable then that will be the outcome."

CUPE Local 734 represents Town of Truro employees in water and wastewater services, parks and recreation, roads, and so on.

Conciliation talks are set for October 28 with assistance from the Department of Labour.
