CUPE Says 50/50 Health Benefits Were Not on Bargaining Table for City Inside Workers

ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR--(Marketwire - Jan. 23, 2011) - CUPE inside workers with the City of St. John's are being unfairly used as political pawns by the mayor and council and managers of Metrobus Transit.

That charge comes today from CUPE NL President Wayne Lucas who says, "Instead of being able to celebrate a tentative settlement with the City of St. John's, the members of Local 1289 are instead faced with inaccurate statements about their settlement.

"It is totally disingenuous for Mayor O'Keefe to say that the deal just signed with city inside workers hinged on a 50/50 cost-share on health benefits. This issue was not even on the table," says Lucas.

CUPE National Representative Ed White, who negotiated the tentative settlement with Local 1289, says, "What the mayor and council fail to realize is that this deal still has to be ratified by the members of that local. It is not fair that details of this settlement are discussed prior to them seeing it.

"It is also not at all helpful for the mayor or managers in the Metrobus dispute to be putting forth inaccurate information about the deal we negotiated.

"It's also never a good idea to compare one set of contract talks to any other because every set of talks is completely unique with its own set of circumstances and issues at play," says White.
