CVS, Rite-Aid, Safeway, Walgreens to Be Honored at the 2007 Community Awards

Major Chain Pharmacy Retailers Recognized for the Initiatives and Programs That Serve Their Respective Communities

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - August 21, 2007) - Drug Store News & Time Inc. announced today the winners of the 2nd Annual Community Awards. CVS, Rite-Aid, Safeway and Walgreens will be honored on September 27, 2007 in the Henry Luce Room at the Time & Life Building in New York City.

The Community Awards, presented by Drug Store News and Time Inc., honor retailers and their teams for the service and care they provide to individuals and communities throughout the United States. Winners are chosen based on their financial contributions, corporate initiatives for community outreach, patient education and outreach, service on non-profit boards and general involvement in the communities where they serve.

CVS will be honored for its work in the areas of social welfare and associate volunteer programs, specifically the Welfare to Work and Volunteer Challenge Grants programs. Welfare to Work employs over 12,000 individuals, formerly on public assistance, at CVS locations around the country. CVS also donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Volunteer Challenge Grants Program, which distributes funds to over 200 community organizations for which employees volunteer.

Rite Aid will be recognized for its work on diabetes, skin care and children's health, including their work with Children's Miracle Network. Rite-Aid has been working with CMN since 1994 and raised almost $4 million for them last year alone! Rite-Aid associates are very involved in community efforts from CMN balloon sales in stores, to hosting special events and individual efforts such as a city-wide sidewalk sale, a 120-mile motorcycle ride and a carnival.

Safeway initiatives in the areas of hunger relief and immunization, including their Hunger Relief program and work with America's Second Harvest, have earned them a Community Award. In 2006, Safeway donated more than $110 million worth of merchandise to local food banks and other hunger relief initiatives. Safeway also developed the first pharmacist-administered travel medicine program, providing pre-travel immunization, consultation and medication services.

Walgreens projects with the disabled, including the new Anderson Distribution Center, will also be acknowledged. The Anderson Distribution Center was designed to employ at least 30 percent of the workforce with people with disabilities. One of their objectives is to open it up to other Fortune 500 companies and show them what can be done to employ the disabled.

A donation will be made to the charity of each winner's choice and a portion of each attendee's registration fee will also go to charity. In total, over $50,000 will go back to the communities that the retail honorees serve.

Sponsors for the 2007 Community Awards include: American Express and Johnson & Johnson.
