Cynthia Watson Named Vivo's Mission Leader

CALGARY, AB--(Marketwired - December 15, 2015) - A 20-year veteran of Canada's social sector has been named to lead Vivo on its mission to raise healthier generations in Calgary, and beyond.

After a nation-wide search that attracted more than 80 candidates, Vivo's Board of Directors has appointed Cynthia Watson to be the organization's new chief executive officer.

"Ms. Watson has pursued a lifelong quest to embolden others to make a bigger difference in the world," said Board President Frank Muller. "We're excited to have her leading us as we continue our generational work helping get more people, more active, more often."

"With Watson at the helm, we're confident that as a mission-driven social enterprise committed to providing healthy living leadership, helping shift communities and creating a new model for Canada's public recreation sector, we'll make even greater impact."

Vivo creates local solutions that respond to the national challenge of sedentary behaviour and physical inactivity. It manages and operates one of Calgary's leading regional public recreation facilities serving the city's growing population in north-central Calgary. Since opening its doors it has welcomed more than 11-million guests.

"Leading Vivo is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take the organization's compelling vision, and together with others, create a powerful vehicle for transformational change in Calgary, and beyond," said Watson.

Watson, who begins her new duties February 1 next year, has headed Vivo's innovation and research initiatives since joining the organization in 2013. She has worked previously for the Talisman Centre, the former Calgary Health Region and the Tillicum and Veterans Care Society in BC.

Watson succeeds Sue Scott, the organization's first CEO, who is retiring after heading the organization since 2002.
