CyOptics Acquires Inplane Photonics

Acquisition of "Silica-on-Silicon" PLC Technology Expands CyOptics' Toolbox for Photonic Integrated Circuits

LEHIGH VALLEY, PA--(Marketwire - November 7, 2007) - CyOptics, Inc., a leader in Indium Phosphide (InP) optical chip and component technologies, today announced the acquisition of Inplane Photonics, a leading manufacturer of Planar Lightwave Circuits (PLCs) for optical networks in Telecommunications and Defense applications. Terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.

Inplane's unique industry leading silica-on-silicon PLC technology enables the integration of optical circuits for data transmission, distribution, detection and conditioning on multi-function silicon chips. This integration allows the miniaturization of components for optical communication networks in a variety of markets, from Telecom to Bio-Photonics and Test & Measurement. The acquisition expands CyOptics' Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) technology platforms through the combination of monolithic and hybrid integration of InP laser and detector arrays onto PLCs. This integration will reduce dramatically the number of individual components required, thereby increasing the functionality and lowering the cost of the overall solution.

"The addition of Inplane's complementary PLC technology will bring new capabilities to CyOptics' PICs and will allow us to enhance the integration features of our products," said Ed Coringrato, CEO of CyOptics. "The combination of best-in-class InP and PLC technology will create a unique capability in the market. We will also leverage the PLC technology to further expand Inplane's and CyOptics' many existing engagements with the Defense industry."

Michael Cyrus, CEO of Inplane Photonics, said, "The team at Inplane has developed an impressive portfolio of PLC building blocks and has clearly established a technology leadership position in the market of PLC integration. With the addition of the silica-on-silicon PLC technology CyOptics is well positioned to address the future growth markets in Telecommunication and Defense."

Inplane has achieved one of the highest levels of PLC integration, both in terms of the number as well as the variety of photonic elements achieved in the market today. Most notable is the use of high and multi-delta materials in waveguide circuits for optimizing performance, innovative optical circuit designs for new and improved functionality, use of on-chip gain through Erbium doped waveguides, and hybrid integration of semi-conductor source and detector components.

About Inplane Photonics

Inplane Photonics was founded in 2001. The company designs and manufactures the most highly integrated "system on a chip" solutions based on Silica on Silicon technology available today for both commercial and defense markets, which include telecommunications, LAN/WAN networks, avionics and shipboard systems. Lockheed Martin has selected Inplane as a subcontractor on its Highly Integrated Photonics contract with the US Air Force, where the military contractor is developing fiber-optic network technology for tactical combat aircraft. Inplane has a turnkey manufacturing capability, including a 5,000 sq. ft., class-100, PLC wafer processing facility. The wafer processing is largely based on established materials, processes and equipment used by the semiconductor industry. The company is based in South Plainfield, New Jersey.
