D S Simon 2014 Web Influencers Survey: Brand Journalism a Growing Source for Reporters

Online Media Turns to Brand Integration to Increase Revenue

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Feb 12, 2014) - Social media and brand journalism is proving to be a key resource for journalists covering stories for online media outlets. That's one key finding of the D S Simon 2014 Web Influencer Survey. It found 92% of online reporters are relying on social media for story ideas and 61% have run stories after they were pitched via social media. Furthermore, 81% use third-party video in their stories.

"Smart communicators need to create their social and video content with the idea that reporters will be viewing it for story ideas," said Doug Simon, President & CEO of D S Simon Productions. "Effective social media will have to take on a more journalistic tone."

The survey found 52% of sites accept sponsored content while 42% of journalists refer PR people to their advertising departments. "We are seeing a significant increase in brand integration as part of online journalism," said Simon. "Clearly, this is an effort to monetize their sites more effectively."

The "D S Simon 2014 Web Influencers Survey," now in its fifth year, was conducted through Survey Monkey during late 2013. We received more than 300 responses from journalists, including reporters and producers at TV, radio, newspaper, magazine, web media and bloggers.
