Dads Tackle the Toughest, and Most Rewarding Job: Child-Rearing

Men increasingly involved in their children's lives

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 17, 2009) - On Mother's Day the most phone calls are made while on Father's Day the most collect phone calls are made. This image of dads is, however, undergoing a transformation as growing numbers of fathers are becoming equal partners in child-rearing - even in those cases where mom and dad don't live together.

This Father's Day, Success By 6 Peel is honouring all dads and the critical role they play in parenting.

After decades of research to determine the impact of large numbers of children being reared without fathers, we know that children suffer greatly, says Brian Russell, founder of Dads Today, an initiative to promote involvement, rights and education of fathers. "If you look at any measure of child well-bring, kids are placed at great risk if they grow up without their fathers," he says. "They're more likely to have psychological problems, abuse drugs and alcohol, fail in school and get involved in violent crime."

"Fatherhood is extremely fragile," says Russell, pointing out that it's easier for men than women to give up being parents. "Men sometimes need to be challenged to be there for their kids, but they should also be told that they are valued and capable."

Although the number of single parent households in Canada is high and rising, Russell says he is encouraged by the higher numbers of men who are taking unpaid leave or vacation after the birth of a child. A StatsCan study found the number of days fathers of preschoolers miss work for personal or family reasons jumped to 6.3 days in 2007 from 1.8 days a decade earlier.

"We know that fathers are unique and irreplaceable and we need to give them as much support as possible," says Elena DiBattista, Director of Success By 6 Peel. "This Father's Day, we want to thank fathers for playing an increasingly active role in child-rearing."

"Our mission at Success By 6 is to give children the best start in life, and we recognize that the involvement of both parents is critical to a child's emotional well-being and healthy development," says Ms. DiBattista.
