The 20-member Board of Trustees governs the Academy, which is Michigan's oldest independent school, holding the mission in trust and focusing on fiduciary responsibility. In collaboration with the Society of the Sacred Heart, the Board sets policy and hires the Head of School. The Board is a voluntary group of Religious of the Sacred Heart and lay men and women, and is supported by a strategic plan and various Board committees.

The Academy of the Sacred Heart is the oldest independent school in Michigan, celebrating its 161st year serving metropolitan Detroit. Founded in 1851 in downtown Detroit, the Academy moved to its 44-acre campus in Bloomfield Hills in 1958. It is a Catholic, college-preparatory school for young women from infancy through Grade 12 and for boys from infancy through Grade 8 of many cultures and faiths. The Academy is a member of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, which includes 22 schools in the U.S. and affiliation with the Society of the Sacred Heart in 41 countries around the world.
