Dallas Weight Loss Surgeon at Kim Bariatric Institute Discusses His Results Compared to New Gastric Sleeve Surgery Study

Dr. David D. Kim, Head of the Kim Bariatric Institute and Creator of the David Kim Inverted Gastric Sleeve Technique, Discusses a Recent Study on a Rare Complication Associated With Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy Weight Loss Surgery

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwired - Jun 10, 2015) - Bariatric surgery is a way for individuals who suffer from morbid obesity to successfully lose weight and reduce serious risks to their health. Weight loss surgery procedures can help patients adjust the way in which their bodies digest food, giving them an earlier feeling of fullness at mealtimes and leading to significant weight loss. Of the major types of weight loss surgery available, laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection surgery, also referred to as vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is becoming one of the more popular options, says Dr. David D. Kim, a bariatric surgeon in Dallas and the Arlington area and head of the Kim Bariatric Institute. A recent study published in the journal Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases focused on the rates of a rare complication associated with laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery, and Dr. Kim says the results are quite interesting.

Laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery often involves the use of a medical stapling device to remove about 75-80% of the stomach. The remainder is reshaped into a tube-like "sleeve," which allows for a much lesser amount of food intake, an earlier feeling of fullness, and subsequent weight loss. The laparoscopic gastric sleeve surgery leak rate study researched 539 patients over a five-year period, and found that 2.8% of them had experienced a rare complication known as a "staple line leak." The complication can occur when digestive contents make their way out of the newly-shaped stomach through sealed or stitched areas and into the abdomen. While staple-line leaks can often be managed with early diagnosis and treatment, Dr. Kim says they still may cause a host of problems, including infections and abscesses that require additional surgeries, extended hospitals stays, more days of missed work, and other challenges to a patient's health and lifestyle.

With that in mind, Dr. Kim says there are promising techniques available that can reduce the risks of staple line leaks, including the David Kim Inverted Gastric Sleeve™ surgery. Developed by Dr. Kim, this technique involves an additional step in gastric sleeve surgery designed to reinforce the staple line and provide it with enhanced strength, which can prevent the sleeve from stretching and minimize the chance of a staple line leak. Dr. Kim notes that the David Kim Inverted Gastric Sleeve™ technique is a standard part of all gastric sleeve surgeries performed at Kim Bariatric Institute. In fact, he says bariatric surgeons at the practice completed more than 1,000 gastric sleeve procedures last year and not a single patient had a staple line leak.

Dr. Kim says the technique, expertise, and commitment to additional levels of safety that a bariatric surgery practice employs are very important things to keep in mind for patients who are considering surgical weight loss treatment. He notes that Kim Bariatric Institute has focused many of its efforts on providing patients with state-of-the-art procedures and advanced techniques such as the David Kim Inverted Gastric Sleeve™ to reduce surgical risks and help them lose weight in a safe and effective manner. Dr. Kim says, with new research and techniques designed to give patients a safer procedure and a successful weight loss journey, the field of bariatric surgery will continue to progress.
