Dallas Weight Loss Surgeon on the Team-Based Approach to Healthcare

Bariatric Surgeon David D. Kim, MD Discusses a Recent Article Covering a New Method of Patient Care: the Team-Based Approach

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwired - Jan 21, 2015) - According to an article published earlier this year on the Wall Street Journal's website, some medical practices in the U.S. are adopting the team-based approach to care over the traditional doctor-patient relationship. The team-based approach is a collaboration among a group of medical professionals - such as nurses, physician's assistants, and others - who provide many aspects of care to an individual patient, which can include writing prescriptions and administering tests. This is all supervised by a primary doctor. Dr. David Kim, a bariatric surgeon in Dallas, says that this approach to medical care is a standard at Kim Bariatric Institute in the treatment of patients suffering from morbid obesity. "We have been using this model for some time and have a team of bariatric professionals to care for our patients."

The team-based approach may be on the rise. The online.wsj.com article, written by Laura Landro, says this method of patient care arrives on the heels of a shortage of primary care physicians, which is a problem that may become even more prominent as new patients enroll in health plans under the Affordable Care Act. The article also highlights several studies that provide more insight into the effects of this method. One in particular is a 2012 study by the University of Washington and Group Health that found one group of patients, who were suffering from depression combined with heart disease and/or diabetes and were treated with a team-based approach, to have an improved physical and emotional health outcome compared with another group that was not treated with the same approach.

The article says the method empowers team members to provide medical services to the full extent their training and medical licenses allow. At his Dallas bariatric surgery practice, Dr. Kim -- along with Dr. Bridget Holden, another surgeon at Kim Bariatric Institute -- oversees the patient's bariatric treatment and coordinates their care with bariatric nurses, physician's assistants, and other qualified health professionals. He says the team approach is one of the hallmarks of its surgical weight loss treatment program, and is part of Kim Bariatric Institute's overall goal of providing patients with an extensive support system and personalized treatment.

While Dr. Kim recognizes that every patient may not have access to a facility that has adopted the team-based approach, he says he is happy to see that its popularity may be on the rise, as he finds it to be an effective and efficient way for patients to receive quality care.
