Dallas Weight Loss Surgeon With Kim Bariatric Institute Discusses Alarming New Findings About the Rise of Obesity

Dr. David D. Kim Comments on Recent Findings Suggesting a Significant Rise in Obesity in the U.S. and Across the World

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwired - May 18, 2016) - Not long ago, the American Medical Association officially classified obesity as a disease. Dr. David D. Kim, a Dallas bariatric surgeon and the head of Kim Bariatric Institute, has been sounding the alarm for years about the growing problem of obesity, and has pushed the need to improve an individual's ability to see dietitians, family practice doctors, and weight loss surgeons who can help them successfully address the problem and reduce serious health risks. According to a recent study in The Lancet, a peer-reviewed medical journal, obesity is continuing on an upward trend throughout the world. Dr. Kim says the results of the study is further proof that more attention needs to be paid to this increasing epidemic.

As reported by CNN, the research focused on trends in the body mass index (BMI) of adults in 200 countries over a period of 39 years, from 1975 to 2014. It found that, during that time, the global obesity rate among men had tripled. Among women, the rate had doubled. English-speaking countries with high incomes -- including the U.S., the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand -- are home to more than 25% of people who have severe obesity. The study found that one in four men with severe obesity and one in five women with severe obesity live in the United States. It also suggested that, based on current trends, 45% of men and 43% of women in the U.S. will be obese by 2025.

Dr. Kim says studies like these are key to bringing awareness to a problem that has the potential to devastate the lives and livelihoods of people all over the world. He notes that, since the condition can be caused by a variety of factors, treatment for obesity often requires a multifaceted approach. This can include nutrition education, exercise programs, and support systems designed to help individuals on the path to losing weight and to living healthier lifestyles. For those who suffer from severe obesity, Dr. Kim says that an array of bariatric surgery options, including gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery, can often serve as effective tools to jumpstart the weight loss process and help people develop lifelong habits that effectively lead to significant weight loss and a dramatically reduced risk of serious health complications linked to obesity.

Dr. Kim believes that barriers to proper care for individuals suffering from obesity will ultimately need to be broken down in order for these global trends to reverse. However, he notes, with increased awareness of this growing epidemic, more and more people can commit themselves to fighting the rise of obesity and helping those affected navigate the road to better health.
