Dan Mangan Hosting an Event to Raise Awareness and Funds for Youth Homelessness

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - April 11, 2011) -

Dan Mangan and End Homelessness Now partner to present SMORGASBORD, a fundraising event on Saturday, April 16 featuring music, spoken word, and multi-medium artistry in support of homeless youth initiatives. Host of the event, Dan Mangan, will be joined by co-performers Veda Hille, Aidan Knight, The Crackling, Mike McGee, and Charles Demers, who are donating their time and talents to create this inspirational evening aimed to increase awareness of youth homelessness in Vancouver.

Special Guest Mayor Gregor Robertson will present this year's Local Hero Awards to recognize individuals and organizations that demonstrate leadership and commitment to Ending Youth Homelessness in our City. Rumors suggest that the Mayor, who plays the tuba may add to the entertainment by joining Dan Mangan in a duet on stage.

Quick Facts About Youth Homelessness:

  • There are more than 900 homeless youth in Metro Vancouver. This number could jump to 2000 if you include the hidden homeless youth who are couch surfing.
  • 20% of the confirmed homeless youth in Metro Vancouver are under the age of 19.
  • A study by the British Columbia Federation of Foster Parent Associations estimates that 65% of people who live on the street are former foster children.
  • Aboriginal youth are disproportionately represented among youth living in the streets.
  • 70% of those who are homeless are dealing with mental health issues.
