Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Joins VHA Inc.

IRVING, TX--(Marketwire - December 5, 2007) - Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a principal teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School and one of the leading oncology treatment and research centers in the world, has joined VHA Inc., the national health care alliance.

Dana-Farber conducted an extensive analysis before deciding upon membership in the VHA alliance. The selection of VHA was based on the recommendation of Dana-Farber's senior leadership team and an independent consulting firm that conducted an intensive evaluation of competing proposals by VHA and other leading group purchasing organizations (GPOs).

"We looked for a partner who was willing to grow with us over time. We believe VHA is the right choice for Dana-Farber because VHA offers tools and resources to support our entire supply chain, not just the traditional areas," says Hugh Kelleher, vice president of Operations at Dana-Farber.

Boston-based Dana-Farber purchases a significant amount of equipment, supplies and pharmaceuticals annually in support of its clinical and research-based mission. Because it focuses on treating cancer, Dana-Farber purchases more oncology drugs and equipment used to treat cancer than most acute care hospitals. The connection with VHA will enable Dana-Farber to reduce expenses annually on supply purchases, improving efficiency and extending resources that can be used for research and patient care.

VHA's contracting services company, Novation, has one of the largest oncology supply portfolios in the industry and will support the clinical and research supply chain needs of the institution and its affiliates. At the same time, Dana-Farber will be able to pool its own purchasing power on a regional and national basis with other VHA members to drive additional savings.

Gerry Roche, area senior vice president for VHA, states, "Working with the leadership and staff at Dana-Farber will allow VHA to reach beyond our traditional approach to member engagement and develop a customized approach to meet their unique needs in oncology research and patient care. And we look forward to Dana-Farber's participation in regional and national collaborative networks with other VHA members."

Dana-Farber will have access to and participate in a number of regional and national VHA member networks that support collaboration with other VHA members on clinical and operational improvement activities.

VHA has been asked to provide custom services to meet the unique needs of Dana-Farber, along with dedicated capital asset management services to support the extensive construction and growth plans of the organization. Utilizing the capabilities of VHA's Supply Chain Custom Services and VHA's Global Spend Analytics team, Dana-Farber will move to enhance supply chain management and business analytics in both research and clinical areas.

"VHA serves some of the best hospitals in America, and the addition of Dana-Farber to our roster only serves to elevate the caliber of our membership," said Curt Nonomaque, president and chief executive officer of VHA.
