ATHENS, GREECE--(Marketwire - December 12, 2008) - Danaos Corporation (NYSE : DAC ) announced
that on Wednesday, December 10, 2008, one of its vessels, the Maersk
Mytilini, teamed with U.S. Coast Guard search & rescue coordinators to
rescue a French adventurer approximately 1,700 nautical miles southeast of
Hilo, Hawaii.
The French Adventurer Anne Quemere departed San Francisco in an 18-foot
kite sailing boat, the Adrien, on Nov. 4 attempting to sail to Tahiti. Her
Oceankite became disabled with a torn sail and a damaged pulley system and
was stranded in the Intertropical Convergence Zone, known as the Doldrums.
The U.S. Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) issued a
Marine Assistance Radio Broadcast (MARB) on Tuesday, December 9, asking for
any Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) system vessels in the
area to assist.
The crew of the container ship Maersk Mytilini responded to the MARB at 6
p.m. on Tuesday, December 9. Quemere was brought safely aboard the ship
Wednesday, December 10 at 5 p.m., and was reported to be in good condition.
Mr. Iraklis Prokopakis, Senior Vice President and COO of Danaos
Corporation, commented: "We feel proud of our Master, Captain John
Anagnostou, and his crew who conducted a successful rescue operation in
line with the Danaos Corporation policy and commitment to the safety of
life at sea. The rescue operation was a typical example of the solidarity
of the people at sea and a proof of the importance of AMVER in search and
rescue operations at sea."
