DARA Workers Stage National Demonstration

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 12, 2007) - Defence support workers at DARA will hold a national demonstration tomorrow (13 December) outside DARA Almondbank in Perth and DARA Fleetlands in Hampshire, to show their opposition to the proposed sale of helicopter and component work currently undertaken by the MoD at DARA.

The demonstrations will take place from 12:30pm on Thursday 13th December 2007. Employees at DARA Almondbank, and DARA Fleetlands, Gosport, Hampshire are unanimously opposed to the proposed sale of their work to Vector Aerospace of Canada.

Ian Waddell, National Officer, Unite said,

"The trade union members at DARA will demonstrate their anger during their lunch time in order to avoid any disruption to the service they provide to the Ministry of Defence.

Trade union members at DARA Almondbank and DARA Fleetlands are incensed that the Government could contemplate selling such valuable defence assets at a time when the supply of helicopters to the front line in Iraq and Afghanistan is of such critical importance.

The ethos of delivering a product for the defence of the nation could be lost overnight and replaced by a commercial ethos where profit comes first. There is a huge question mark over whether the private sector is better placed to provide the service provided by loyal and committed civil servants."

The Trade Unions, Unite, Prospect and PCS have presented an alternative proposal to Baroness Taylor Min DES and are seeking the withdrawal of the proposed sale.
