DARPA Turns to Telcordia for Secure-by-Design Networking System

System Supports MANET Communications and Data

PISCATAWAY, NJ--(Marketwire - June 17, 2008) - Telcordia, a global leader in the development of IP, wireline and mobile telecommunication software and services, has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop ZODIAC (Zero Outage Dynamic Intrinsically Assurable Communities), a secure-by-design system that directly supports the integrity, availability, reliability, confidentiality and safety of MANET (Mobile Ad hoc Networks) communications and data. Telcordia will support the initiative with a team that it will lead that also includes Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, George Mason University and SPARTA, Inc.

IP networking continues to transform communications worldwide, but has limited resilience to cyber-attacks as security was not part of the initial design. As a result, DARPA is focused on creating a replacement for IP networking that includes security as part of the fundamental design in order to combat growing security threats. Part of DARPA's Intrinsically Assurable Mobile Ad hoc Network (IAMANET) program, ZODIAC includes security as part of the system design and does not rely on previous methods of using patches. ZODIAC is designed to help prevent common cyber-attacks such as denial of service attacks, eavesdropping, viruses and worms. Any attempt to launch one of these attacks will be quickly detected and dropped, saving valuable resources such as network bandwidth and device power.

"With a world renown reputation for solving the world's most complex information and communications problems, Telcordia creates industry-changing networking technologies and software for the global communications market and the United States government," said Adam Drobot, president and chief technology officer, Advanced Technology Solutions, Telcordia. "Through ZODIAC, Telcordia offers the comprehensive redesign for IAMANET that is necessary to achieve intrinsic assurance in the face of a broad range of threats that could potentially cripple our IP communications infrastructure."

Through this initiative, Telcordia will provide DARPA with a clean-slate approach to data networking that leverages innovations in containment concepts, group keying, trust management, naming services, routing, resource allocation and transport. The ZODIAC software design is modular, extensible and will apply to both wireless and wired networks, allowing DARPA to leverage its investment well beyond MANETs as Department of Defense requirements evolve.
