Data Domain DDX Arrays Protecting U.S. Army Data

World's Largest Corporate Intranet Chooses Data Domain for DR, Replicates Backup Data Using Satellite Network

SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwire - May 29, 2007) - Data Domain, a leading provider of Enterprise Protection Storage systems for disk backup and network-based disaster recovery, today announced that the U.S. Army has deployed Data Domain's DDX Arrays to protect a major military communications portal that serves 1.8 million globally dispersed users. The implementation provides both backup and disaster recovery capabilities, with network-based replication via satellite network from a Data Domain DDX Array located in Southwest Asia to a DDX Array located in the United States. Data Domain's Global Compression™ technology and Data Invulnerability Architecture proved to be key enabling technologies in achieving efficient satellite network transfer of backup data and the mission critical levels of reliability required by the client.

In this challenging and unusual Data Domain system implementation, the sandy environmental conditions of the desert in close proximity to deployed troops prohibited the use of tape media for data protection. The inherent latencies associated with satellite communications required special systems configuration, and transferring large volumes of backup data over a "Spartan" satellite network to the east coast of the U.S. required exceptional data deduplication and network efficiencies. Data Domain engineering and SE staffs worked with the client on the project's system configuration, yet no personnel were required on-site in Southwest Asia for the proof of concept phase. This underscores the flexibility and simplicity of installation of Data Domain's DDX Arrays.

The client's communication portal supports more than 400,000 unique log-ins and 700,000 log-ins daily. The portal's technologies enable a broad scope of communication and collaboration activities, including virtual teaming, e-mail, chat, instant messaging, community websites and remote file storage for its users. Backup storage of these communications is indefinite and the client is committed to making these communications readily recoverable to users regardless of when they were created and stored.

The Chief of Architecture for the U.S. Army client explains, "The U.S. Army has a very low tolerance for loss of data and we knew, given the physical environment and the network type we were dealing with, that this project would not be an easy one. Data Domain's support was both exceptional and critical to the process. Our mission was to deliver more reliable and responsive communications services to soldiers in-theatre on the other side of the world. Data Domain helped us make it happen."

"Many of the aspects that distinguish Data Domain from the competition, such as instantaneous verification of backup availability, RAID 6 level protection and high speed inline deduplication for efficient time to DR, were absolute requirements for the U.S. Army," said Beth White, vice president of marketing for Data Domain. "Our client now has a data protection solution that can scale to meet the needs of a global data center infrastructure while maintaining the same simplicity and reliability levels that every Data Domain customer enjoys."
