Data-Driven Automotive Camera System Built for Auto Enthusiasts

Beautifully Crafted Camera Houses Advanced Algorithms Allowing Drivers to Effortlessly Capture High-Energy Moments, Easily Edit and Seamlessly Share Driving Adventures Straight From The Road

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - Oct 13, 2015) - Waylens Inc. today announces the Waylens camera, a perfectly crafted intelligent camera system designed from the ground up for auto enthusiasts. The system includes a high performance camera, wireless adaptor that connects to a vehicle's computer, and a stylish steering wheel remote. The whole system is available exclusively on Kickstarter for early adopters to lock-in pre-orders at a fraction of the retail price.

The Waylens camera overlays real-time performance data over high quality video empowering drivers to tell fuller, compelling stories. Its innovative mobile app and cloud software enables users to quickly identify and share their most interesting moments, hidden within hours of footage, with as little as one touch on the remote.

The Waylens camera is crafted to be the perfect automotive camera. With the sleek lines of its unibody aluminum enclosure, gorgeous metallic detailing, and completely circular retina OLED display, Waylens Inc. has gone beyond the boxiness of ordinary cameras to design a device that perfectly complements the interior of any high-end vehicle. Its video quality is tuned specifically to the challenges of an automotive environment. A gigantic, custom, 7-element lens is nestled within a full metal lens barrel, and its large state-of-art Sony CMOS sensor pairs with a 28nm high performance video processor to produce the best possible video quality for any situation. Regardless of whether it's high velocity motion or low light or nighttime driving, all scenarios are captured in full 1080p at 60 frames per second.

Capture the Whole Story

By combining video with data, the Waylens camera empowers users to tell the full behind-the-wheel story. With a Bluetooth enabled connector tapping directly into the car's computer, users can record what's happening under the hood as well as what's on the road. In addition to performance data from the vehicle, the Waylens camera is loaded with its own suite of advanced sensors specifically chosen to complement data streams available from the car's OBD-II computer, including a 10 Hz, high resolution GPS for professional track timing accuracy, a 9-axis motion sensor to show the G forces a car can pull, and dual microphones to capture the symphony of exhaust notes. Data is automatically displayed over recorded video, creating for viewers the closest thing to actually sitting behind the wheel. The touch screen doubles as a user-definable gauge, expanding the dashboard to include any of the available data streams in real time.

Cut the Crap from Hours of Footage

Gone are the days of sifting through hours of footage to find the best clips - the Waylens camera makes it easy to cut the crap. This feat is only possible by leveraging the enormous amount of data simultaneously collected in parallel with video. The camera's software can identify the most interesting clips based on the highest G forces or fastest 0-60 MPH accelerations for example. By the time a user pulls over, the Waylens mobile app has automatically created ready-to-share video clips and presents them to the user through a simple interface. With the included steering wheel remote, users can even safely share their driving experience from behind the wheel with only one touch. For those who prefer more control when it comes to editing video, the companion app provides a minimal, yet powerful data driven editing experience. Users can search and filter moments using data to hone in on exactly what's needed, greatly improving on the established process of manually sorting through hours of footage.

The Waylens camera isn't just beauty and brawn, it's also extremely intelligent. The technology underpinning the Waylens experience is a direct reflection of the company's deep connection to the MIT Media Lab. The brain inside is capable of processing 318 megapixels per second while the camera's gigantic, 7-element lens and full metal lens barrel eliminates warping and misalignment caused by extreme temperatures. Its sophisticated connectivity architecture includes Bluetooth 4.0, Bluetooth LE, and WiFi 802.11n, allowing the camera to seamlessly integrate with the car's computer, the Waylens mobile app, and steering wheel remote. The Waylens camera connects to a vehicle's computer through the OBD-II port that is standard on all vehicles post 1996. The latest Ambarella video encoder chip provides broadcast quality video encoding and high performance image signal processing, such as motion compensated 3D noise reduction and adaptive lens distortion correction. Continuous loop recording is managed by sophisticated memory allocation algorithms, allowing the driver's attention to remain on the road and not on the camera, all the while knowing they will never miss an interesting moment.

Price & Availability

"We saw the need not only for a high-quality camera that specifically caters to driving enthusiasts, but one that was at an affordable price point that allows for a user-friendly, seamless experience," says Haowei Zhang, co-founder and CEO of Waylens, Inc. The Waylens camera is available for pre-order starting at $249 on Kickstarter, and the product will ship in 2016.
