MEMPHIS TN--(Marketwired - November 23, 2016) - As a nationwide provider of background screening solutions, Data Facts, Inc. is an industry expert on powerful employment screening tools employers rely on to make smart hiring decisions. Julie Henderson, Data Facts Director of Sales, and Sarah Gaither, Data Facts Operations Director for the Background Screening division, sat down recently and shared a few pointers that employers should know about background screening.
Julie Henderson, explains. "The end of the year is a time businesses need to look at their practices, and make sure they have the best hiring system possible going into the New Year. It's critical to include a revamp of your background screening policy?"
Henderson advises to "follow these guidelines to hone your pre-employment screening policy."
Be consistent. Decide who to screen, the desired information about each job applicant, and which verifications to order on each person. Create a written policy outlining this strategy.
Be suspicious. Julie Henderson knows employers don't always get the full picture with a resume. "About half of resumes contain a mistruth. They can range from lying about a criminal history to fudging dates of employment to creating fictitious references." Look at resumes with a critical eye and verify all the information that that is relevant to the position.
Establish relevance. A person applying as a heavy machinery driver may not need a credit check, but he would need a Motor Vehicle Records check and a drug test. Setting perimeters for each position helps maintain practices that don't discriminate but DO protect the workplace.
Make it accurate. Sarah Gaither reminds us that spot-on information is paramount. "Remember, the information retrieved on the candidate is only as accurate as the person who found it for you. Do not try to have someone in your office perform the background check."
Hire an experienced background screening company. Gaither ticks of her recommendations. "Choose a company that has been in business a long time, that is accredited by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS), and that has private investigators on staff."
An effective background screening policy is an integral part of a safe and successful hiring process. It's important to have a set standard in place, and revisit the policy periodically to maintain its positive impact on the workplace. Gaither sums it up with "a solid background screening policy is a strong stepping stone toward a safe and secure workplace. And THAT is a big reason to be thankful!"
