DataDirect Technologies' Jonathan Robie Named to InfoWorld's List of 2005 Innovators

Visionary Behind DataDirect XQuery Named to Innovator's Hall of Fame for Groundbreaking Work on XML Query Technology

BEDFORD, MA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 8, 2005 -- DataDirect Technologies, the industry leader in standards-based components for connecting applications to data, and an operating unit of Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS), today announced that Jonathan Robie has been named to InfoWorld Magazine's Innovators 2005, for his work on the new XQuery language standard. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who are breaking new ground in the technology industry.

"Thanks to the ideas and efforts of these groundbreaking individuals, technology advancements on several fronts -- XQuery, 64-bit computing, and SOA, to name a few -- are gaining momentum," said Richard Gincel, Infoworld associate editor. "In turn, we are pleased to honor those who are leading the way with their ingenuity."

As the XQuery Program Manager at DataDirect, Robie drives the vision for DataDirect's XML query products. DataDirect XQuery, which is scheduled for general availability in September of this year, will be the industry's only database and platform independent XQuery engine. The product will dramatically simplify data integration projects allowing developers to easily combine XML and relational data using standards-based interfaces.

According to the InfoWorld profile on Robie, "As XML becomes the lingua franca for everything from XHTML Web pages to Word documents; the value of a general-purpose XML query language becomes ever clearer... Back in 1998 there was no consensus that anyone would need a full-fledged XML query language. Today, XQuery is being implemented by all the major relational databases, by middleware vendors, in content management systems, and by open source projects. It's even becoming part of the SQL standard."

"As one of the designers of XQuery, I felt it was important to develop a product that realized the original XQuery vision -- to allow developers to work with both XML and other data sources, in any environment. In particular, developers regularly need to work with XML and relational data, so we built DataDirect XQuery to meet this requirement," said Robie. "Most XQuery implementations either work only with XML files, or work with only one database or application server."

DataDirect XQuery is currently in beta distribution and is being used by hundreds of developers worldwide. To learn more about the DataDirect XQuery beta program, go to http://www.datadirect.com/products/xquery/xquerybetahome/.

"Jonathan Robie was instrumental in the development of the XQuery language. He and his team delivered an XQuery implementation that has been getting great reviews from our beta participants," said Rick Reidy, president of DataDirect Technologies. "If their feedback is any indication, XQuery is changing the economics of XML processing and Jonathan is greatly deserving of recognition as an InfoWorld Innovator."

A profile of Robie and the other winners appears in the August 1 issue of InfoWorld and is available online at http://www.infoworld.com/reports/31SRinnovators2005.html.
