Davis Instruments Announces Powerful New Tool for Avoiding Grape Crop Pest Damage

SACRAMENTO, CA--(Marketwire - January 26, 2011) -   Davis Instruments today announced its new Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Module for Grapes, at the 2011 Unified Wine & Grape Symposium, in Sacramento, California. The new software provides the final step in linking grape growers' weather data to actual pest risk, giving them a powerful new tool in the battle against grape crop pest damage.

The IPM module is an add-on software component that works with Davis Instruments' Vantage Pro2™ solar-powered wireless weather station and WeatherLink® to gather real-time temperature, humidity, and rain and leaf wetness data. It also generates stepped risk levels to warn when conditions are favorable for pest development. The software is loaded with pest models for all known grape pests, including diseases, insects and mites. (Growers may delete pests not present in their area.)

"Davis Instruments has a history of using its weather technology to help grape growers with their crops, but this is the company's first software dedicated to vineyard pest management," said Anson Moore, Sales and Marketing Director, Davis Instruments. "We have worked with wine and grape experts to identify environmental conditions that favor destructive pests and diseases. We believe our pest management package (the IPM module, Vantage Pro2 and WeatherLink) is an essential tool for healthy crops and healthy profits."

From their PC, growers can now see at a glance when conditions are favorable for insect pests reaching a damaging stage of growth, or for disease development to occur. A color-coded spreadsheet puts the highest risk potential pests at the top of the list and highlights them in red. Because they can configure the software to reflect pests present in their area and use real-time data from their own vineyard weather sensors, the software's updated pest development algorithms provide growers with the most accurate, vineyard-specific risk assessment available.
