Davis Instruments Official Weather Station Provider for Record-Breaking Nik Wallenda Chicago River Walk

HAYWARD, CA--(Marketwired - Nov 6, 2014) - Davis Instruments was the official weather station provider for The Discovery Channel's "Skyscraper Live with Nik Wallenda" event and broadcast. Legendary daredevil and wire walker Nik Wallenda set two new Guinness Book World Records while walking the high-wire over the Chicago River on Sunday, November 2nd: the first for incline high-wire walk at 19 degrees; the second for highest blindfolded high-wire walk at 543 feet. Wallenda started atop the Marina City West Tower and travelled more than two city blocks on his way to the Leo Burnett building, 50 stories above the frigid waters of the Chicago River. He then crossed between the Marina City Towers blindfolded.

This was the third time Davis Instruments has provided weather stations for the Wallenda team. They were also onsite for Wallenda's successful Niagara Falls and Grand Canyon crossings.

As the Chicago event approached, Nik told the Davis team, "So great having Davis Instruments here to measure the weather conditions for me. On Friday we had winds exceeding 65 mph and I was asked if I was concerned about the weather by people and told them, no, I am walking on Sunday and praying the weather is going to be better."

Wallenda's prayers were answered with the best weather conditions of the week. The Davis team monitored temperatures that rose to 44°F with a wind chill nearing 40°F, and wind speeds reaching 23-mph gusts as they funneled through the man-made canyon of skyscrapers.

Davis Instruments and The Discovery Channel production team set up an on-site weather network consisting of five Davis Vantage Pro2 wireless weather stations to monitor the changing conditions before and during the walk. The stations also provided support for Weather Channel anchor Jim Cantore during the three-hour event. One station was set up on each of the three buildings, with a fourth station hung mid-wire over the Chicago River. A fifth was set up at ground level, on N. Wabash Street Bridge. The Davis Instruments crew fed weather conditions -- generated every 2.5 seconds -- to the Discovery Channel production team for live broadcast throughout the event.

Viewers were able to monitor up-to-the-minute weather conditions for all five weather stations at www.WeatherLink.com during the three-hour live event.

"It was our honor to provide all the weather instrumentation and crew to monitor the conditions in cooperation with the Discovery Channel, NBC Peacock Networks and The Weather Channel team on these two historic walks in Chicago by Nik Wallenda," said Jim Acquistapace, Davis CEO.
