DE-CIX Completes 100G Optical Layer Build for New Flagship Apollon Platform

Sophisticated Deployment Provides Reliable and Scalable Architecture, Enables Customers to Directly Leverage Hardened, Robust Peering Backbone at the Edge

FRANKFURT, GERMANY--(Marketwired - May 13, 2013) - DE-CIX, the world's leading Internet Exchange operator headquartered in Frankfurt am Main (Germany), announces today the completion of the optical backbone of its new flagship DE-CIX Apollon platform. Deployed in four supernodes and three feeder sites across the city of Frankfurt, the new optical layer now delivers a total capacity of 12Tbps across its mesh-network topology. This optical platform is the foundation of DE-CIX's new switching platform, which is currently being deployed and is expected to be ready for service in September 2013.

Upon deployment of the full 100Gbps capability at the core and at the edge of its Ethernet interconnection platform, DE-CIX Apollon will have over three hundred 100 Gigabit ports across its entire optical network, making it one of the largest metro networks in the world.

The completion of the optical backbone now provides DE-CIX Apollon enhanced reliability and scalability, enabling customers to directly leverage an expanded portfolio of advanced services that will be available in early 2014.

The advanced optical transport infrastructure is built on the ADVA FSP 3000 platform, with 100G Metro and Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) capability. The ADVA 100G Metro solution features 4x28Gbps direct-detection technology, providing DE-CIX Apollon a highly efficient use of space, power and spectral efficiency, as well as lower costs than most other metro solutions.

"With this robust 100G optical backbone now in place, DE-CIX sets the stage for delivery of advanced services and a rich feature-set for our customers, who demand only the best in performance, reliability and scalability," states Harald A. Summa, CEO for DE-CIX. "DE-CIX has experienced 50-100% increases in traffic each year for the past 15 years, and we expect this trend to continue. Because of this, we've built this future-proof platform that can be easily upgraded when the time is right to further extend advanced, high-performance capabilities to our clients."

Offering a full portfolio of Ethernet-based interconnection services up to multiple 100 Gigabit ports, DE-CIX Apollon is a carrier-neutral exchange in which carriers and service providers around the world can connect to over 500 networks from fifty countries.

The optical backbone deployment began in December 2012 and was completed this month. The next phase of the DE-CIX Apollon platform deployment will begin now and encompass the migration to Alcatel-Lucent's Core Router 7950 XRS, which will support world-leading port density of up to eighty 100 Gigabit Ethernet ports per chassis and advanced edge functionality and performance.
