Death of Inmate at Donnacona Institution


DONNACONA, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - July 6, 2012) - On July 5, 2012, at approximately 12:10 a.m., inmate Simon Martineau, from Donnacona Institution, a maximum security institution, was found unresponsive in his cell. Correctional Officers and medical staff immediately performed CPR and an ambulance was called.

The inmate was taken to the Centre hospitalier de l'Université Laval, where he was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m.

At the time of his death, Mr. Martineau, 31 years old, was serving a 3-year and 1-month sentence for possession and traffic of substances, breaking and entering and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. His sentence had commenced on October 25, 2010.

Next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been notified. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
