Death of Inmate at Port-Cartier Institution


PORT-CARTIER, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Aug. 15, 2012) - On August 15, 2012, at approximately 4:30 a.m., inmate Gilles Bertrand, from Port-Cartier Institution, a maximum security institution, died of apparent natural causes at the Centre hospitalier régional de Sept-Îles.

At the time of his death, Mr. Bertrand, 67 years old, was serving an indeterminate sentence for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and assaults. His sentence had commenced on February 10, 1981.

Next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been notified. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
