Death of Inmate at the Federal Training Centre


LAVAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - May 22, 2012) - On May 18, 2012, at approximately 7 p.m., Gérald T. Howdle, an inmate at the Federal Training Centre was found unresponsive in the institution's courtyard. Correctional officers immediately performed CPR and paramedics were called.

The inmate was taken to the Cité de la Santé Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 8 p.m.

At the time of his death, Mr. Howdle, 58, was serving a life sentence for non capital murder. His sentence had commenced on November 01, 1972.

Next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been notified. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
