Dec. 18 and 19 update on tickets and activities around the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 18, 2008) - The host organizing committee for the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship outlined the following updates on ticket availability and activities around the event. The teams from Russia and Kazakhstan arrive today at the Ottawa airport.

TICKETS

Fewer than 400 tickets remain for each of Canada's first two preliminary-round games at SBP Arena on Friday, Dec. 26, against the Czech Republic and Sunday, Dec. 28, against Kazakhstan. In Group B action at the Civic Centre, fewer than 25 tickets remain for Russia's match-ups against Finland on Dec. 28 and Sweden on New Year's Eve. The Scandinavian country showdown on Dec. 26 between Sweden and Finland also has fewer than 25 tickets available. There are fewer than 100 tickets remaining for each of the other 11 games at the Civic Centre.

Samsung New Year's Eve Celebration - The host organizing committee for the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship, in partnership with the National Capital Commission (NCC), announced today the events surrounding the Samsung New Year's Eve Celebration on the Rideau Canal Skateway at Rideau Street, featuring free concerts by Finger Eleven and the Amanda Rheaume Band, and the Canada-USA game on big-screen televisions.

TEAM ARRIVALS AND SCHEDULES FOR DEC. 18-19

Canada - The Canadian squad will be in Orangeville, Ont., until Dec. 23. Team Canada media contact is Andre Brin, 403-540-8444 or abrin@hockeycanada.ca. Its first pre-competition game is Friday, Dec. 19, against Sweden at Toronto's Air Canada Centre.

Czech Republic - The Czechs will practise today and Friday from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the PowerAde Centre in Brampton, Ont. They will face Slovakia in a pre-competition meeting on Sunday, Dec. 21, at The Aud in Kitchener, Ont.

Finland -The Finnish squad arrives in Canada on Dec. 20. Last year's sixth-place team, who arrives at the Toronto airport Friday at 4:20 p.m., will practise in Barrie until Dec. 23. Finland takes on Canada in its first pre-competition game on Sunday, Dec. 21, at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ont.

Germany - One of two countries to receive promotion from 2008, the German team arrives at the Ottawa airport Friday at 6:13 p.m. They will practise at the Robert-Guertin Arena in Gatineau, Que. from Dec. 20 to 23, and will face Latvia in its only pre-competition game on Monday, Dec. 22, at the Brockville Memorial Centre in Brockville, Ont.

Kazakhstan - The team flies into Ottawa today at 4:20 p.m. They will practise at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa, Ont., until Dec. 23. Its first of two pre-competition games is Sunday, Dec. 21, against Russia at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa, Ont.

Latvia - The Latvian squad, who arrive at the Ottawa airport at 7:14 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, will be located at the Memorial Centre in Brockville, Ont., from Dec. 19 to 23. Latvia and Team USA play in a pre-competition game Sunday, Dec. 21, at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston, Ont.

Russia - The bronze medalists from 2008 will practise at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston, Ont., from Dec. 19 to 23. The Russians arrive today at the Ottawa airport at 4:30 p.m. Their first pre-competition game is against Kazakhstan on Sunday, Dec. 21, at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa, Ont.

Slovakia - The seventh-place finishers from 2008 will be based at The Aud in Kitchener, Ont., until Dec. 23. The Slovaks practise tonight from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Aud, and again on Friday at 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Sweden - Last year's silver-medal-winning squad is practising at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ont., until Dec. 23. They are on the ice today from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and on Friday from 11 a.m. to noon.

United States - Team USA, who finished fourth in 2008, arrives at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston, Ont., on Dec. 21 for practices and pre-competition games. The Americans play two pre-competition games at the K-Rock Centre, meeting Latvia on Sunday, Dec. 21, and Russia on Tuesday, Dec. 23.
