Decision Released from the Ontario Court of Appeal


TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 19, 2015) - The Ontario Court of Appeal released its decision today on the conviction appeal for Asad Ansari who participated in the activities of a terrorist group commonly referred to as the "Toronto 18".

The Court upheld the June 23, 2010 conviction on a terrorism offence, namely participating in the activities of a terrorist group contrary to s. 83.18(1) of the Criminal Code.

On October 4, 2010, Asad Ansari was sentenced to 6 1/2 years of imprisonment. With credit for time served, he was released immediately.

The PPSC is responsible for prosecuting offences under federal jurisdiction in a manner that is free of any improper influence and that respects the public interest. The PPSC is also responsible for providing prosecution-related advice to law enforcement agencies across Canada.
